Life insurance has become easier to access. Banks, insurance companies, financial advisers, online platforms, and even mobile applications now offer different forms of protection.
More Filipinos have also heard about its importance. We are often reminded that life insurance can help protect our family, replace lost income, prepare for medical expenses, or build funds for future goals.
But easier access does not always make the decision easier.
For many people, the problem is no longer, “Where can I get life insurance?”
The more important question is:
“What is the right life insurance for me?”
Too Many Choices Can Lead to No Decision
When people receive several offers at the same time, they may see different premiums, benefits, riders, payment periods, investment projections, and coverage amounts.
One person may recommend a low-cost protection plan. Another may present insurance with an investment component. Someone else may focus on health coverage, critical illness benefits, education funding, or retirement.
All these options can be useful—but not necessarily for the same person.
When the choices become difficult to understand, people may experience decision paralysis. Instead of choosing the wrong plan, they choose nothing at all.
Unfortunately, delaying the decision does not remove the financial risks faced by the family.
Insurance Was Highlighted in the 2026 SONA
The importance of financial protection was also discussed during the 2026 State of the Nation Address.
Insurance was presented as part of protecting different sectors of society. Farmers and fisherfolk were reminded that protection may cover not only crops, livestock, fisheries, equipment, and agricultural facilities, but also the lives of the people whose work supports their families.
The speech reported approximately ₱19 billion in agricultural insurance compensation over the past four years.
Insurance protection for Overseas Filipino Workers was also mentioned, with nearly seven million OFWs reportedly already covered by insurance.
Microinsurance was highlighted as an affordable and accessible option for ordinary Filipinos, provided that the product is legitimate and properly registered.
The speech also discussed SSS, GSIS, and PhilHealth as important forms of social and health protection. These programs help workers and families prepare for retirement, emergencies, illness, disasters, and other major financial challenges.
The overall message was clear: financial protection should not be limited to wealthy families. It is part of responsible preparation for the future.
Start With Your Need, Not With the Product
The right life insurance is not automatically the cheapest plan, the most expensive plan, or the plan with the most benefits.
It should be based on your actual situation.
Are you a breadwinner whose family depends on your income? Do you have children whose education you want to protect? Are you more concerned about medical expenses, critical illness, retirement, business obligations, or estate planning?
These needs may require different priorities.
Before comparing insurance products, it is better to understand your protection gap, financial responsibilities, budget, and long-term goals.
That is why I created a Financial Protection Assessment. It can help you identify which financial need may require your attention first.
It is not a replacement for professional advice, and it does not automatically recommend a specific product. It is simply a practical starting point so you can ask better questions and make a more informed decision.
Do not begin by asking only, “How do I get life insurance?”
Begin by asking:
“What protection does my family actually need?”
